International Standing
ON THIS PAGE: - African Committee - CISAC - Reciprocal Agreements African Committee
SAMRO is involved in various initiatives of CISAC in the SADC and other regions of our continent involving WIPO and UNESCO. Our Board of Directors is always looking for pragmatic ways to become pro-actively involved in assisting fellow African societies in the development of Collective Administration in their countries so that, in turn, just dues for the use of our music on our continent may accrue to our members.
SAMRO previously occupied the position of Chair of the CISAC African Committee (2000-2005) - whose main focus is the implementation of the Partnership For Progress plan. The latter is a long-term strategy that aims to develop collective management in Africa while emphasizing the region's self-reliance. SAMRO has been a member of the African committee since 1994 and it has chaired this committee for two consecutive terms. SAMRO's current CEO serves as a member of the Executive committee.
CISAC
SAMRO is a member in good standing of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). Our officials serve on a number of organs of CISAC and, in so doing, represent the interests of Southern African composers, authors and publishers on this important international platform. SAMRO's Chief Executive has served on the former Executive Bureau since 2001 and since 2004, and is currently Vice-Chairman of CISAC's Board of Directors. SAMRO has been a member of the former Administrative Council of CISAC on and off since 1973.
CISAC's Common Information System (CIS), consists of a key decision-making body, the CIS Supervisory Board (CSB). The composition of the CSB is limited to a maximum of 20 member, of which SAMRO's General Manager of International Affairs is one such a member. CSB which seeks to define future standards and management tools for collective administration societies, as well as addressing the future "networking" of society database systems.
Legal Committee SAMRO's Company Secretary is one of 20 members on this committee, whose function is to accurate and comprehensive legal information, assistance and advice to CISAC members and its statutory bodies.
Technical Committee SAMRO's Chief Operations Officer chairs the Distribution Technical Committee (CT-R).
Reciprocal Agreements
SAMRO is affiliated to over 200 similar societies all over the world and, through a system of reciprocal agreements, authorises these societies to administer the music of Southern African composers, lyricists and publishers in their particular countries. Conversely, SAMRO administers - in its own territory - not only the music of its Southern African members, but also the great store of music of over 1,6 million composers, lyricists and publishers in some 150 countries and territories. The world's Copyright Societies are grouped into five regions: Ibero - American Region; African Region; Asian-Pacific Region; European Region and the North American Region.
