Key Operational Areas Although it is intangible, the creative work of a music composer or author is property - in this case, it is referred to as "intellectual property".
As with any form of property, there is value in intellectual property, which has come to life through the effort of an individual or individuals working together.
These composer/authors are entitled - through the Copyright Act - to be compensated for several rights that exist in their work, one of the primary ones being the performance of the work in public.
SAMRO is a collective administration society that is charged with the administration of performing rights in Southern Africa. We represent our composer/author and publisher members when a musical work is performed in public, broadcast or transmitted in a diffusion service.
We license the performance in public, broadcast or transmission of copyright music works, collect the licence fees, assemble the information about the use of that music and then compute and distribute the royalties.
