Surendran Reddy Tribute Concert
WitsMusic presents the Surendran Reddy Tribute Concert, A Celebration of a South African Composer on Thursday 26 August.
International pianist and composer, Surendran Reddy, (1962 - 2010) passed away on Friday 22 January 2010, in Konstanz,Germany. His very rich life was dedicated to music, which ranged in styles from western classical music and jazz to the deeply rhythmical sounds of mbaqanga. As a humanitarian, Surendran was also actively involved in the fight against apartheid and in the liberation struggle, using music.
Some of South Africa's leading performers of contemporary music, amongst them pianists Jill Richards, Michael Watt, Wandile Molefe and Janándi van Schoor will be featured in this tribute concert curated around a selection of Reddy's works for piano, clarinet, voice, bass guitar and organ. The programme will include music in Reddy's "Clazz", crossover style. An introduction by Heike Asmuss will be accompanied by video material of Reddy himself discussing his approach to composition and performance.
